The Tote and Furnace, Trentham, Wellington, NZ

First opened in the early 1960s, The Tote and Furnace – known affectionately as The Tote – is a family-friendly restaurant and bar located in the heart of Trentham, a suburb of Upper Hutt in the wider Wellington area.

Trentham is well known for its army camp, racecourse and memorial park. In 1841 John Barton purchased a large area beside the Hutt River. He named it Trentham after his childhood home in England.

Our hotel is located in the suburb of Trentham in Upper Hutt, directly across from the station and Trentham Racecourse, the main thoroughbred horse racecourse for the Wellington city area.

The racecourse has a proud history. Its buildings were erected by the Wellington Racing Club in 1906, and the first race meeting was held there in January 1906. Today the races are conducted by the Wellington Racing Club.

The course’s buildings were used during the Second World War as a military hospital and also to house American troops.

Today The Tote’s name echoes its connection with the track and the thousands who over many years have cheered on the magnificent thoroughbreds.

Our hotel is perfect for when you’re looking for a casual atmosphere to watch the next sports match or to catch up with your mates. The Tote offers a fun, social environment for everyone with access to a beer garden and plenty of big screens.

Our huge food menu has plenty on offer, from big steaks to bar snacks and every pub classic in-between. Wash your meal down with one of our many choices of local and international tapped beers.

Come in soon and say hello.
